Alf Gunvald Nilsen is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He researches and writes about the political economy of development and democracy in the global South. His most recent books are Adivasis and the State: Subalternity and Citizenship in India’s Bhil Heartland (Cambridge University Press) and Indian Democracy: Origins, Trajectories, Contestations (Pluto Press).
