Anjum Katyal has been involved with arts publishing for decades as an editor, writer, translator and critic. She is the author of several books on theatre. Her published works include Habib Tanvir: Towards an Inclusive Theatre, Badal Sircar: Towards a Theatre of Conscience, and Sacred to Profane: Writings on Worship and Performance. As Chief Editor of Seagull Books, Calcutta (1987–2006) she was responsible for overseeing several translation series, such as their New Indian Playwrights series, which featured post-independence Indian playwriting in English translation, as well as The Selected Works of Mahasweta Devi. She was Editor of Seagull Theatre Quarterly (1994–2004), the only national theatre journal of its time, which focused particularly on the voices of practitioners. She has translated Habib Tanvir’s Charandas Chor (Charandas the Thief), Hirma ki Amar Kahani (The Living Tale of Hirma) and Bahadur Kalarin (Bahadur the Wine Seller) as well as Usha Ganguli’s Rudali (Funeral Wailers) and stories by Mahasweta Devi and artist Meera Mukherjee. As Editor of Art and the City, a web magazine on the contemporary arts, she has commissioned and edited pieces on contemporary arts in urban India. She is currently Curator, NEW Festival of Arts and Ideas, Santiniketan, and has been Director, Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival for the past eight years.
