Sanjoy Hazarika is currently International Director of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), New Delhi, India, which has offices in London, UK, and Accra, Ghana. Mr. Hazarika is a human rights activist, columnist and an award-winning former reporter with The New York Times. He is the Founder-Director of the Centre of North East Studies and Policy Research at Jamia Millia Islamia, member of the Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee to review the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), and former member of the National Security Advisory Board. He has made more than a dozen documentaries on human rights and conflict. He also designed and developed the unique Boat Clinics initiative in 2005 on the Brahmaputra, which provides lakhs of people with regular health care.
Journalist and editor, Hazarika is regarded as an expert on the North East. He studied at Shillong & London and has held fellowships at Harvard, Tufts, University of Kentucky and Bellagio. He is a specialist on migration and has authored a number of books including the latest Strangers No More: New Narratives from India’s North-east, published 25 years after his acclaimed Strangers of the Mist. Other books include Writing on the Wall, Rites of Passage (about migration from Bangladesh) and Bhopal: The Lessons of a Tragedy. He has edited three books & contributed chapters to others, including anthologies by Oxford University Press, SAGE, Pan MacMillan and Penguin.
He contributes to The Economic Times, The Hindu, The Indian Express, Hindustan Times, The Tribune (Chandigarh) and The Assam Tribune.
Hazarika is a recipient of the Dr Jean Mayer Award for Global Citizenship.
